Dresser turned Media Stand

Today I'm sharing my favorite project that I've completed to date. I absolutely love the result.

I had been searching for a new media stand for MONTHS for our living room. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted it to be a piece that was timeless and would last. I also wanted something that provided storage for movies, controllers, and whatever else we wanted to hide.

After months of craigslist searching, I found a dresser that fit the bill for $30!! Let me repeat- $30!! I was so excited about starting the rehab process.

Here is the before shot. It needed some work and I was so up for the challenge.

What you need for the project:
Patience
spray paint for the hardware
primer and paint
stain in color of your choice
sandpaper
paint brushes and rags

Now I'm no expert, but this is how I started the project:
I removed the top row of drawers because this is where our media components will live.

We then removed the rest of the drawers to make painting the entire piece easier. We also removed the top.
I scrubbed the oil hardware with Dawn dish soap and prepared it for paint. I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in an oil rubbed bronze finish. I sprayed 2 coats and finished it for extra durability with a clear coat.

I used Kilz primer to prepare the dresser for paint. I used 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of paint.

You can see the top shelf is not flush so the cable box would not sit well in there when it was finished. My handy father-in-law cut a board that we painted to match so everything would sit evenly.

We refinished the top by sanding, applying 2 coats of stain, and 1 coat of polyurethane. You can see in the photo above that we hadn't set the board in place to level the top shelf.

Here is the finished project! We completed this over 6 months ago and it has held up really well! I will have a separate post with how we keep it organized.

So what do you think?

Feel free to ask questions or share the love!

See you soon!
